Introduction
Samantha Flowerdew is the protagonist of Samantha’s Quest: Isles of Galerock. Her friends and loved ones call her Sammy affectionately. Samantha is a silent 18-year-old girl who recently graduated high school with the top marks in her school.
Samantha is a Christian who attends church regularly, and has just enrolled at university to study medicine. After entering the Isles of Galerock to save her older sister, Amy, Samantha was chosen to be the wielder of the Golden Jubilee Blade.
Appearance
Samantha has fair skin and straight brown-coloured hair that has a slight reddish tint, and a fringe. Samantha’s hair extends to just below her shoulders; two strands hang down at the front, while the rest of her hair rests at the back. She has ocean blue eyes.
Samantha’s outfit consists of an iconic mid-length yellow sleeveless dress with a black trim tied around her waist. She wears open black summer sandals with brown soles and has a daisy in her hair.
Altogether, Samantha’s outfit, along with her hair, are the colours of a bee—giving her an innocent, friendly, and relaxed vibe. Samantha’s appearance invites people to feel comfortable around her, and evokes a sense of joy and warmth.
Personality
Samantha is silent, courageous, highly intelligent, sassy at times, and deeply caring towards everyone around her. Samantha’s courage is seen in the fact that she’s willing to risk her life to save her friends and loved ones. This is most notable when she, despite initial hesitation, decides to enter the portal to save both Amy and her friend, Clara.
However, Samantha’s courage is not simply rooted in her personality, but her faith in Jesus Christ. When both she and Amy are in danger, she prays a silent prayer to God, and in response, she receives the Golden Jubilee Blade for protection. Lucinda later on comments that it was because Samantha relied not on herself, but God, that she was deemed fit to wield the blade.
Samantha’s intelligence is seen in the fact that she scored the top marks in her school during her final high school exams—a fact which impressed both Amy and Riley. Her cautious and reserved nature, as contrasted with Amy, also highlights her intelligence, as someone who thinks carefully before doing.

While usually serious, Samantha can sometimes be quite sassy and snarky. When Amy is motor-mouthing about the benefits of entering the portal, Samantha mimics her speech with a “blah blah blah” gesture. Another time is when Amy assumes Samantha is glad to have gone into the portal, to which Samantha stares at her with the most deadpan expression, with one hand on her hip.
Samantha’s caring nature shines forth at several moments. But most particularly when she asks Riley if he’ll be okay taking on the portals by himself, and also when she lets Clara know she’ll walk home with her, after she gets a difficult call from her father. Samantha is the kind of person who always has her friends’ backs no matter what.
A key part of Samantha’s personality is her silence. So far throughout the series, she hasn’t actually spoken a single word. She’s come close to speaking a few times, but before she could utter a word, was interrupted by Amy (or something else, like Clara’s ringing phone), to the point where it’s become somewhat of a recurring joke.
Instead, Samantha communicates by gestures and pantomime, or just lets others speak for her. Despite being mute, Samantha is nevertheless an excellent communicator, who is able to make what she’s thinking clear through her actions and facial expressions alone.
Role in the Story
As the protagonist, Samantha’s role in the story is central. The story unfolds from her perspective, so everything that Samantha encounters is relevant to the viewer. As the story develops, Samantha will continue to learn what it means to be a blade wielder, and how she can protect those she loves.
Key Quotes/Episodes
Ethereal Voice to Samantha, Episode 3:
“Now go, Samantha. Use the Golden Jubilee Blade to protect your sister. I have a feeling we’ll meet again one day.”
Amy to Riley, Episode 4:
“Sammy just graduated high school with the top marks in her school, would you believe it? She may not seem like it at first, but she’s actually a genius! I’m kinda jealous, to be honest!”
Riley to Samantha, Episode 5:
“Oh, and before we go, Samantha: try not to worry too much about what I told you. I know that’s easier said than done… but you really are under no obligation to become more involved with the Isles of Galerock. That’s simply not fair for you. You should just focus on the next chapter in your life, like your uni studies, or whatever you decide to do. I’ll be able to handle things from here.”
Lucinda to Samantha, Episode 5:
“I think that’s the actual reason. You didn’t trust in your own power to solve the problem, but you trusted God instead, and that’s what made you truly strong.”
Clara to Samantha (Memory), Episode 7:
“To be honest, while I do enjoy spending time with a few people… you’re the only true friend I have in life. The only one who really understands me… and who’s always there for me no matter what. And that means everything to me.”
